Op-Ed Writing
Participants in this fellowship will be expected to contribute op-eds to Young Voices Europe for publication on a new blog. Fellows will be paid $100 (USD) for each op-ed they write. Fellows must write at least one op-ed per month, but they are welcome to write more, up to a maximum of five per month. That means you could earn up to $500 (USD) per month for writing op-eds for Young Voices Europe. Per Young Voices editorial policy, however, only one draft can be considered by the editors at a time.
If you have connections with media in your country and you are able to get your writing published in external outlets, that’s a bonus, but it is not a requirement of this fellowship.
What type of articles will I be writing?
An op-ed is a political or policy opinion article, usually 600-800 words. It is the type of article you would find under the ‘comment’ or ‘opinion’ section of a newspaper. We are not looking for news, features, journalism, arts or reviews. We want people with bold opinions on politics and policy who believe in liberty in Europe.
Topics
We consider key topics to be:
- Taxes and the cost of living
- Energy and the environment
- Consumer freedom and nanny statism
- Tariffs and other barriers to free trade
However, fellows are welcome to write about whatever they like, as long as it is focussed on policy and falls under the umbrella of liberty in Europe. Op-eds can be based on the activity of either the European Union or national or local governments in any EU27 country.
Fellows’ op-eds will be edited by Young Voices staff before being published on the Young Voices Europe blog.
Timeline
The first phase of this fellowship will span September – December 2022. We are hoping to continue the project into 2023, but that isn’t confirmed yet.
